Welcome to the Heinrich Lagerbuger Society
The Heinrich Lagerburger Society creates the space for diverse voices to build community and collaborate in the vibrant city of Houston. We aim to allow writers to connect with others on a global and timeless level.
The Heinrich Lagerburger Society started as a prank at the University of Houston in 2002. It was the brainchild of a totally obnoxious, overeducated, pretentious bitch and a dirty hippie poet who wore too much patchouli. Designed to teach a fellow student about the pitfalls of braggadocious behavior during workshops and critiques, the author Heinrich Lagerburger soon became a symbol for those in the creative writing program dedicated to literary composition and the art of taking a person down a notch.
What started as a joke grew into an actual writing society made up of 150 members. The society held weekly workshops, hosted readings, and even created an online zine. It was featured in local newspapers and on the radio. However, as the founding members graduated university and scattered to the wind, the Heinrich Lagerburger Society became a whisper on that wind.
It has taken two decades for us to come back together and re-form the Heinrich Lagerburger Society as a place for writers to gather, learn, and share. The spikiness has worn down and the patchouli (hopefully) has faded. We are a welcoming and supportive society, even if you are unsure of your style or who your audience is.
The Heinrich Lagerburger Society creates a collaborative space for diverse voices to come together in the vibrant city of Houston, which serves as the perfect incubator for emerging writers. Writing is the equalizer: It is a way to have a voice unlike anything else. A community makes you resilient while a voice makes you eternal. Join us!
